Applications are now open for the 2024 Accelerating African Women’s Leadership in Climate Action Fellowship.

The Accelerating African Women’s Leadership in Climate Action Initiative aims to achieve a dual objective: increase the number of African women leading climate action and initiate the production of climate solutions that work for smallholder women.

Through this program, AWARD aims to contribute to equitable rural livelihoods by increasing the number of women climate change leaders producing innovations that address the diverse needs of smallholder farmers in African agri-food systems.

It will promote the generation and transfer of context-specific knowledge on climate adaptation technologies to different stakeholders, including smallholders, extension workers and policy makers.

Goals

  •  Strengthening the leadership, mentoring and negotiation skills of African women climate change specialists.
  • Strengthen the capacities of African women and men climate change specialists to integrate the gender dimension into their research and practices.
  • Amplify the voices and increase the visibility of African women climate change specialists in global and regional dialogues on the topic.

Eligibility

The Accelerating African Women’s Leadership in Climate Action initiative is open to applicants who meet the criteria below:

  • African women from Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi and Senegal.
  • African women working across disciplines on gender and climate change.
  • Have at least an undergraduate degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant agri-food systems discipline.
  • Participants must have at least five years of professional experience and have demonstrated interest and contribution in the field of gender and climate change.
  • African women at different stages of their professional careers who are actively engaged in finding solutions to the effects of climate change.
  • Participants working in national and international organizations, including government agencies and non-governmental organizations, as well as in the private sector.
  • Applicants must reside in an African country for the entire duration of the program.

Format of the Initiative

It is a mixed (virtual and face-to-face interventions), non-residential program, which will take place over a period of two years and will include the following activities:

  • Virtual and in-person trainings, including on leadership, negotiation and intergenerational mentoring. They will also participate in a course on integrating gender into climate change interventions.
  • Individual and group coaching
  • Mentoring program
  • Regular peer learning sessions
  • Participate in regular masterclasses
  • Design and lead collaborative climate projects on gender and climate adaptation, known as Climate Research and Innovation Projects (CRIPs).
  • Exhibition on emerging trends in gender, climate change and agri-food systems
  • Organize seminars and other speaking opportunities
  • Modeling Events in the Country
